She punches, she dodges, and she conquers! Indian boxer Saweety Boora has just secured the gold medal in the 75-81 kg finals against China’s Wang Lina at the IBA World Women’s Boxing Championship. And no, she didn’t break a sweat! The light heavyweight boxer produced a remarkable performance against her Chinese opponent and emerged victorious by points (4-3). In doing so, she has become the seventh Indian boxer to be crowned world champion.
Saweety’s victory is a significant achievement as she had previously settled for a silver medal nine years ago at the World Championship. Her determination and hard work paid off as she left no stone unturned to defeat the 2018 World Champion, Wang Lina. With this victory, Saweety became the seventh Indian boxer to be crowned world champion.
In addition to Saweety’s win, Nitu Ghanghas also secured a gold medal in the 45-48 kg category finals. Nitu, who is a Commonwealth Games gold medalist, secured three Referee Stops Contest (RSC) wins in the tournament and faced a tough competition in the semifinals against Kazakhstan’s Alua Balkibekova, whom she defeated 5-2 after a split decision verdict.
Saweety and Nitu’s victories demonstrate the immense talent and dedication of Indian boxers, and it is an inspiring moment for the entire nation. The six-time world champion Mary Kom, Sarita Devi, Jenny RL, Lekha KC, Nikhat Zareen, and now Saweety and Nitu are among the Indian pugilists who have won the world title. The Indian boxing fraternity can take pride in these achievements and continue to strive towards more success in the future.
