Actor Vir Das is making history by becoming the first Indian to host the International Emmys. After winning an Emmy for his comedy special Landing last year, Vir is taking on a new role this year as the event’s host. He shared with us how this incredible opportunity came about and what it means to him.
Vir Das’s Journey from Winning to Hosting
Vir Das reveals that the opportunity to host the International Emmys came about after his Emmy win last year. “The team reached out to me about four months after I won the award,” he explains. “I had known about it for a while, but they only recently made the official announcement. It’s an amazing honor to go from being a nominee to winning an award, and now hosting the show. I never expected any of this. In fact, I didn’t even think I’d get a nomination last year. I’m letting those around me celebrate this moment. For me, the real celebration will be when the job is done.”
Balancing Humor and Sensitivity
At 45 years old, Vir Das has performed stand-up comedy across the globe. But hosting the International Emmys involves a different kind of stage. Given today’s climate, where even a simple joke can cause controversy, Vir is aware of the challenges that come with his role. “I haven’t started writing my script yet because I’m currently busy editing my co-directed film Happy Patel, which is produced by Aamir Khan,” he says. “But I believe that humor is universal. Sensibilities might vary from place to place, but if you start worrying about potential problems, you’ll end up not being true to yourself. People who get into trouble usually don’t expect it. I think it’s best to stay authentic and let things unfold naturally.”
Preparing for the Big Night
The International Emmys are scheduled for November 25, and Vir is focused on making the event memorable. “I haven’t thought twice about what I’ll say on stage. I don’t even think once,” he jokes. For him, it’s all about being genuine and letting the audience’s reactions guide him.
No Limits, Just Laughter
When asked if there are any topics he considers off-limits, Vir’s answer is clear: “The audience sets the limits, not me.” He believes in letting the crowd dictate what’s acceptable while staying true to his comedic style.
As Vir Das prepares to host the International Emmys, his excitement and humility shine through. He’s not only representing his own journey but also paving the way for future Indian talent on the global stage. With his blend of experience and authenticity, it’s clear that this will be a memorable night for all involved.
