Genelia Deshmukh’s Floral Lehenga Is a Beautiful Ode to Indian Heritage

In a world full of fast-changing fashion trends, Genelia Deshmukh reminded us of the beauty of slow fashion and tradition. She recently attended an event in Hyderabad wearing a stunning floral lehenga designed by Gaurang Shah—and it was more than just an outfit. It was a tribute to India’s rich textile history and timeless elegance.

Inspired by the Mughal Gardens

The lehenga was part of Gaurang Shah’s collection titled ‘रंangरaas’, which brings together old-world charm and modern grace. Shah shared that the design took inspiration from the peaceful Mughal gardens around the Taj Mahal. These gardens are known for their symmetry, calm beauty, and floral patterns—and all these elements can be seen in the lehenga’s details.

The outfit featured a flowing lehenga skirt, a structured blouse with traditional buta (motif) detailing, and a soft dupatta. The skirt was decorated with flower patterns that looked like miniature paintings, blooming gently across a light gold-beige background. The mix of soft pinks, oranges, yellows, and greens added a fresh and romantic touch.

A Fabric Rooted in Tradition

The lehenga wasn’t just beautiful; it was also a product of skilled craftsmanship. It was made from Khadi Jamdani, a handwoven fabric known for its intricate detailing. This type of textile comes from the Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh and is one of India’s oldest weaving styles.

“What makes Jamdani special is that the motifs are woven into the fabric during the weaving itself, not added later,” said Shah. “It’s like painting, but with threads. It’s a slow and careful process.” In fact, this particular lehenga took 18 months to make entirely by hand—a true example of slow fashion and patience.

Styled With a Modern Twist

Genelia was styled by Pranay Jaitly and Shounak Amonkar, the talented duo behind Who Wore What When. They styled the lehenga like a half-sari to give it a dreamy and graceful look. “Since Genelia follows a vegan lifestyle and supports traditional Indian crafts, this outfit perfectly represents who she is,” the stylists explained.

To complete the look, she wore a statement choker and matching earrings by Kishandas & Co. These pieces were inspired by the traditional Nizami chand motif and were made using multi-coloured gemstones, giving them a South Indian temple-jewellery vibe. She also wore a waist belt and matching bangles (kadas) that added a modern touch to her traditional attire.

Finishing Touches That Stood Out

Genelia’s sleek braid, parted neatly in the centre, was decorated with orange marigolds and beautiful ruby-studded hair accessories, also by Kishandas & Co. Her makeup was soft and minimal—dewy skin, kohl-lined eyes, and a soft rose lip shade that perfectly matched the floral tones of her outfit.
