Have you ever stopped to think about how powerful a small act of kindness can be? Sometimes, it’s not about doing something big, but about showing up for someone who truly needs a friend. That’s exactly what Volunteering For Seniors Inc. (VFS) in Massachusetts is all about. This isn’t just another nonprofit you scroll past—it’s a community-driven initiative making real, visible change in the lives of older adults. And the beauty is, when you dive into what they’re doing, you realize the difference is felt not only by seniors, but by volunteers too.

A Mission That Truly Matters

At its heart, VFS stands for dignity, compassion, and connection. Their mission is simple but powerful: to improve well-being and social inclusion for seniors, especially women and Asian American elders who often feel left out of traditional support systems. That focus makes them unique, because they are addressing needs that don’t always get the spotlight. Too often, older adults quietly slip into loneliness, and VFS steps in to say—“not on our watch.” By creating spaces for interaction, care, and joy, they help seniors feel seen, valued, and included again.

Programs That Bring People Together

What sets VFS apart are its hands-on, heartfelt programs. They don’t just talk about helping seniors—they deliver support in ways that are practical, warm, and deeply human.

  • Friendly Visit Program – Volunteers visit seniors at home for conversations, story-sharing, or simply listening. For seniors who may go days without someone to talk to, these visits provide connection, laughter, and comfort.
  • Virtual Volunteering – Born out of the pandemic but still thriving today, this program connects seniors through Zoom calls, phone check-ins, and group activities. It shows how even technology—often intimidating for older generations—can become a bridge when used with patience and love.
  • Wellness Fairs & Community Events – Hosted at senior living facilities and community centers, these events combine fitness tips, wellness checks, fun activities, and social bonding. They’re like mini-festivals that bring joy, belonging, and energy to seniors’ lives.
  • Resource Sharing Platforms – VFS also runs online caregiver groups, where families can ask questions, swap tips, and find much-needed support. These small yet impactful touches often make the biggest difference.

Why This Work Matters So Much

The beauty of VFS lies not just in the impact on seniors, but in how it transforms volunteers. Science shows that volunteering reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, and boosts mental health. It creates purpose and connection—for both sides.

Older volunteers also find renewed energy and social fulfillment through these programs. Virtual volunteering makes it easier for busy individuals or those who can’t travel to still give back. Most importantly, these programs fight one of the greatest threats seniors face: loneliness. Studies link isolation to cognitive decline and poor physical health. By fostering connection, VFS is not just brightening lives—it’s extending them.

Rooted in the Community, Powered by Heart

VFS is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in South Easton, Massachusetts. It thrives entirely on community support—volunteers, donors, and partnerships. Every dollar raised and every hour volunteered goes directly toward enriching seniors’ lives. But what makes VFS special isn’t just its structure—it’s the relationships it creates. Volunteers become friends. Donors become partners in joy. Seniors become part of a vibrant community that reminds them their lives still matter.

Leadership That Inspires Change

Behind every strong initiative is a team that believes in its mission wholeheartedly. Volunteering for Seniors is no exception. Its leadership team is deeply rooted in both professional expertise and personal compassion, ensuring the organization not only runs effectively but also stays true to its mission of uplifting seniors.

CEO & Co-Founder: Pratima Penumarthy

Pratima has been connected with the elderly community from a young age, helping with their daily needs and caring for her own parents. These personal experiences gave her a deep understanding of the challenges seniors face, which inspired her to create a space where they could find dignity, support, and joy. Along with her husband, she co-founded VFS to fill that gap.

Outside of her nonprofit work, Pratima is an experienced educator with over two decades of teaching behind her. Her ability to connect with both children and adults allows her to bridge generational gaps beautifully. This blend of compassion, education, and leadership makes her a driving force in building a stronger, more connected community for seniors.

Co-Founder: Ramakrishna Penumarthy

Ramakrishna is a compassionate leader who balances a successful career in IT with his passion for helping seniors live active and fulfilling lives. Guided by the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita—“When you feel the suffering of every living thing in your own heart, that is consciousness”—he makes time to take seniors to appointments, check on their well-being, and ensure they never feel forgotten.

Together with Pratima, he built VFS on the principle of keeping seniors socially, mentally, and emotionally engaged. His journey is proof that professional success and community service can go hand in hand.

The VFS leadership team blends expertise, compassion, and culture to serve seniors. Director Badarinadh Vissapragada brings global leadership and a passion for Indian arts; Dr. Rohit Chandra combines psychiatry with holistic community care; and Dr. Srinivas Sonti applies his biotech experience to improve senior health. Vice Presidents Akhila Penumarthy (Outreach), Arpita Shah (Public Awareness), Manisha Parmar (Fundraising), Dr. Monika Manocha Wadhwa (Intergenerational Engagement), and Reshma Nair (Senior Education & Wellness) lead initiatives that strengthen community ties, amplify voices, inspire youth, and ensure seniors live healthier, happier lives.

Together, We Grow

If you’ve been searching for a way to make your time more meaningful, this is it. Volunteering doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, it’s as simple as sitting with someone, calling to check in, or bringing a smile to their face. That’s exactly what VFS makes possible.
