Emraan Hashmi sheds light on the importance of gender equality and introspection as he stars in the courtroom drama Haq, inspired by the landmark Shah Bano case.

Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi, known for his bold and thought-provoking roles, is set to take on one of his most powerful characters yet in Haq, a courtroom drama directed by Suparn S Varma. The film draws inspiration from the historic Shah Bano case, which reshaped conversations around women’s rights and justice in India.

In Haq, Emraan plays Ahmed, a celebrated lawyer whose life takes a dramatic turn when his estranged wife takes him to court seeking maintenance. What begins as a legal conflict soon becomes a deeply personal journey — one that forces Ahmed to confront his own beliefs and the ingrained biases of a patriarchal society.

Speaking about the film’s central message, Emraan explained that Haq is not only a story about women but also a call for men to reflect on their role in upholding equality. “It’s a story of a woman’s voice and her right to dignity,” he told ANI. “But it’s also a story for men — to introspect and realize how, in a patriarchal world, when men think it’s their world, it costs women their dignity. This film captures that reality with honesty and depth.”

Emraan described Haq as a pro-women, humanist film that addresses social issues without judgment or bias. “We’re not pointing fingers at any religion or community,” he said. “The film simply presents the facts and emotions behind a real issue. It’s about equality and empathy — and how we, as a society, can do better.”

He further added that the film’s strength lies in its neutrality and emotional honesty. “When people walk out of the theatre, they’ll feel that Haq is about standing up for women’s rights and dignity. But they’ll also see that it doesn’t vilify anyone — it simply holds up a mirror. It’s about understanding both sides and moving towards fairness.”

With Haq, Emraan Hashmi steps into a role that blends sensitivity, introspection, and courage. The film promises to be a powerful courtroom drama that challenges societal norms and starts a meaningful conversation on equality and respect.
