After a celebrated festival run and strong critical reception, Emma Stone’s psychological black comedy Bugonia is officially set for its OTT debut in India. Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and written by Will Tracy, the film reinterprets the 2003 South Korean cult classic Save the Green Planet! by Jang Joon-hwan through Lanthimos’ distinct absurdist lens.

The film premiered in the main competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 28, 2025, before its theatrical release on October 24. It received generally positive reviews, with particular praise for the performances of Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.

Bugonia OTT Streaming Details

Bugonia will begin streaming on JioHotstar from February 28, 2026. The film will be available via the platform’s Peacock Hub, expanding access to Indian audiences following its global awards-season buzz.

Announcing the release, JioHotstar shared the trailer and wrote:
“Two guys are convinced their boss is an alien. Now they’re determined to do something about it. Nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actress, Bugonia streaming February 28 onwards on the Peacock Hub on JioHotstar.”

With its unconventional premise and Oscar nominations, the film is expected to attract both Lanthimos loyalists and viewers intrigued by high-concept psychological thrillers.

What Is Bugonia About?

At its core, Bugonia is a darkly comic psychological thriller steeped in paranoia and existential anxiety. The narrative follows Teddy, a conspiracy-driven man convinced that humanity faces imminent extinction.

His obsession intensifies when he becomes certain that Michelle, a high-profile biotech CEO, is actually an alien from the Andromeda galaxy plotting Earth’s destruction. Acting on this delusion, Teddy abducts her, triggering a series of unsettling and absurd developments.

The film dissects themes of ecological collapse, power structures, male fragility, and the increasingly blurred line between conviction and madness.

Cast And Crew

Emma Stone leads the film as Michelle Fuller, with Jesse Plemons portraying Teddy Gatz. The ensemble cast also includes Aidan Delbis as Don, Alicia Silverstone as Sandy Gatz, and Stavros Halkias as Casey Boyd.

Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, Bugonia continues his exploration of distorted realities and moral discomfort, combining psychological tension with razor-sharp dark humour. The collaboration further strengthens Lanthimos and Stone’s creative partnership following their previous critically acclaimed projects.

Why Bugonia’s OTT Release Matters

The film’s arrival on streaming significantly widens its accessibility beyond festival audiences and limited theatrical circuits. Given Lanthimos’ growing popularity among Indian cinephiles and Emma Stone’s strong global fanbase, Bugonia could find a second life on OTT through word-of-mouth and repeat viewership. Its genre-bending narrative and awards momentum position it as a premium streaming pick for viewers seeking unconventional storytelling.
