Javed Ali
Also known as: Javed Ali
Javed Ali is a celebrated Indian playback singer known for his soulful Sufi and romantic songs like "Kun Faya Kun," "Jashn-e-Bahaara," and "Arziyan." A regular collaborator with A.R. Rahman on global concert tours, Javed Ali has also shared his inspiring personal journey with Jay-Ho! The Jay Kumar Show — and is set to perform live in Boston in June 2026.
Biography
Javed Ali was born Javed Hussain on Panchkuian Road, Delhi, and studied at Ramjas School 4, Paharganj. He began singing at a young age alongside his father, Ustad Hamid Hussain, a respected qawwali singer. His talent caught the attention of legendary ghazal singer Ghulam Ali, who not only mentored him but gave him the opportunity to sing at his live concerts. As a mark of respect and gratitude toward his guru, Javed changed his name from Javed Hussain to Javed Ali.
Javed’s journey to Mumbai was one of grit and determination — as he shared candidly in an interview with Jay-Ho! The Jay Kumar Show, he arrived in the city with just Rs. 125 in his pocket, hoping to build a career in playback singing. Through persistence and hard work, he rose to prominence, crediting much of his success to faith and divine grace.
He rose to fame in 2007 with “Ek Din Teri Raahon Mein” from Naqaab, and went on to deliver a remarkable string of hits including “Jashn-e-Bahaara” (Jodhaa Akbar), “Arziyan” (Delhi-6), “Kun Faya Kun” (Rockstar), “Guzarish” (Ghajini), “Tu Hi Haqeeqat” (Tum Mile), “Tum Tak” (Raanjhanaa), the title track of “Jab Tak Hai Jaan,” “Ishaqzaade,” and “Tu Jo Mila” (Bajrangi Bhaijaan), among many others. His versatility carried him across regional Indian cinema as well, with playback work in Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Tamil, and Telugu.
Javed has judged and mentored several major television singing competitions, including Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs, Indian Idol Season 10 (where he stepped in following Anu Malik’s exit), and Superstar Singer. He also hosted Zee TV’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa in 2012.
A frequent performer alongside maestro A.R. Rahman, Javed has toured with him across the world and performed at the Headquarters of the United Nations on 15 August 2016, marking India’s 70th Independence Day. In July–August 2016, he performed across nine cities in the United States, including a widely covered stop in Chicago alongside singer Palak Muchhal. He has also used his voice for social causes, performing at fundraisers for war widows and old age homes in Maharashtra.
Javed Ali continues to release new music and collaborate widely — recent highlights include his soulful contribution to the title track of Yuvraaj Parashar’s “Gudhal,” and his 2026 romantic duet “Sanam” alongside singer Shannon K. In June 2026, Javed Ali is set to perform live in Boston at the Lynn Memorial Auditorium, an event hosted by Jay-Ho! The Jay Kumar Show in partnership with Tune N Chill Entertainment.
