Inside Jaane Pehchaane Anjane – The Artists Behind Anupam Kher’s New Musical Comedy-Drama | Part 4

For millions of television viewers, Meghna Malik is instantly recognizable as Ammaji—the commanding Bhagwani Devi Sangwan from Na Aana Is Des Laado, a character who became one of Indian television’s most memorable presences.

But long before Ammaji entered living rooms across the country, Meghna Malik had already chosen the demanding, uncertain and deeply rewarding path of an actor.

From Sonipat in Haryana to the National School of Drama in Delhi, and then to Mumbai, her journey has taken her through theatre, television, films and, more recently, streaming platforms. This fall, that journey brings her to North America as part of Anupam Kher’s musical comedy-drama, Jaane Pehchaane Anjane.

For Greater Boston audiences, Meghna Malik will appear live at the Collins Center for the Performing Arts in Andover on Sunday, October 11, 2026—the special closing performance of the production’s North American tour.

A Foundation Built in Theatre

Meghna Malik completed her Master’s degree in English before pursuing acting at the National School of Drama. She graduated from NSD in 1997 and performed with its repertory company before moving to Mumbai in 2000.

It was a formative beginning.

Theatre asks an actor to be completely present. There are no retakes, no edits and no opportunity to return to a moment later. Every line, pause and reaction has to reach the audience in real time. That training has remained visible throughout Meghna’s work, even as her career expanded into television and film.

Over the years, she has built a body of work that reflects both range and resilience—moving comfortably between intense characters, contemporary roles and stories rooted in everyday emotion.

The Role That Made Her Unforgettable

In 2009, Meghna Malik took on the role that would make her a household name.

As Ammaji in Na Aana Is Des Laado, she portrayed a woman of immense authority whose character represented the harsh social realities at the centre of the show. Ammaji was powerful, frightening and impossible to overlook.

It was a demanding role because it required more than simply playing a villain. Meghna gave the character a distinctive physicality, control and emotional weight, turning Ammaji into a figure audiences discussed, feared and remembered.

The performance earned her major recognition, including the Gold Award for Best Actress in a Negative Role.

For an actor, however, an iconic role can become only one chapter—not the entire story.

Meghna Malik continued to choose roles that showed audiences other dimensions of her craft.

More Than One Screen Identity

After Na Aana Is Des Laado, Meghna moved into sharply different characters.

In Gustakh Dil, she appeared as Barkha, an urban middle-class woman navigating a very different world from Ammaji’s. In Dahleez, she played Advocate Suhasini Sinha, a strong and progressive lawyer whose character offered another contrast to the role that had made Meghna famous.

Her film work has included Chalte Chalte, Kuch Naa Kaho, Taare Zameen Par, Angrezi Medium, Saina, Pagglait and Anek.

More recently, she has connected with streaming audiences through series including Mirzapur, Bandish Bandits and Aranyak.

That range says something important about Meghna Malik as a performer. She has never relied on familiarity alone. Each new character gives her an opportunity to meet audiences differently.

For those who grew up watching Ammaji on television, it has been a pleasure to see her continue evolving. For a younger streaming audience, discovering her earlier work reveals the depth of a career that has been steadily growing for years.

An Actor Returns to a Live Audience

Live theatre offers something no screen can fully recreate.

The actor and audience share the same room. A laugh arrives immediately. A silence has its own sound. A scene changes not only because of what performers bring to it, but also because of how the audience responds that evening.

That shared energy is at the heart of Jaane Pehchaane Anjane.

Written and directed by Gajendra Ahire, the musical comedy-drama explores relationships, memories, companionship and the many emotions that live beneath ordinary conversations. It looks at people who may seem familiar to one another, yet continue to carry parts of themselves that remain unknown.

The title itself captures that beautiful contradiction: Jaane Pehchaane Anjane.

People we know.

People we recognize.

And yet, people whose inner lives may still surprise us.

For Meghna Malik, the production brings together the emotional detail of theatre with the richness of an ensemble led by Anupam Kher and Swaroop Sampat.

She is joined by Maya Sharma, Vikas Rawat, Shraddha Mandale and Herman D’Souza. The production also features music by Anu Malik, lyrics by Kausar Munir and choreography by Chirag Aggarwal.

A Story Made for an Ensemble

A play like Jaane Pehchaane Anjane does not depend on one kind of performance.

Its world is built through relationships—the conversations people avoid, the memories they carry, the humour that appears in difficult situations and the human need to be understood. That requires an ensemble in which every performer brings a distinct life experience and creative instinct to the stage.

Meghna Malik brings hers.

Her work across theatre, television, cinema and streaming has given her the ability to move between different kinds of storytelling. She knows how to make a character command attention, but also how to let emotion emerge quietly.

That balance matters in a story about people who may not always say exactly what they feel.

Audiences may recognize Meghna Malik the moment she walks on stage. But, as the play itself suggests, recognition is only the beginning. The real discovery lies in what unfolds after the curtain rises.

The Fourth Chapter of Inside Jaane Pehchaane Anjane

This series looks beyond the familiar names to introduce the artists and creative minds who make Jaane Pehchaane Anjane possible.

Part 1 explored how choreographer Chirag Aggarwal brings movement into the musical world of the play. Part 2 followed Maya Sharma’s journey through theatre, casting, filmmaking and art. Part 3 introduced writer-director Gajendra Ahire, whose human stories form the foundation of the production.

Meghna Malik is the fourth chapter.

Her journey—from NSD and repertory theatre to one of television’s most recognized characters, and then across films and streaming—reflects the richness that she brings to this ensemble.

And now, Boston audiences will have the chance to see her where an actor’s journey is felt most immediately: on a live stage.
