Hunkkaar The Roar Review: Aneet Padda and Fatima Sana Shaikh Lift an Uneven Thriller

Hunkkaar: The Roar has a compelling premise and strong performances, especially from Aneet Padda and Fatima Sana Shaikh. However, uneven writing, underdeveloped characters and several loose narrative threads prevent the JioHotstar series from reaching its potential.

Directed by Nitya Mehra, Hunkkaar: The Roar began streaming on JioHotstar on September 25. The six-part series features Aneet Padda, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Raghubir Yadav, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Ram Kapoor, Arjun Mathur and Rajesh Sharma.

What is Hunkkaar: The Roar about?

Hunkkaar: The Roar follows a minor who accuses a powerful spiritual leader of rape and the investigation that follows. The story unfolds in the fictional Madhya Pradesh town of Kharganj, where the accused godman commands enormous influence.

Raghubir Yadav plays Baapji, the spiritual leader at the centre of the allegations. Aneet Padda plays Meenu Rawat, the minor whose accusation sets the story in motion.

Fatima Sana Shaikh plays ACP Jasleen Soni, the police officer assigned to investigate the case.

The premise immediately creates a conflict between institutional power, social influence and the pursuit of justice.

Hunkkaar starts with a promising setup

The opening episode is one of the stronger parts of Hunkkaar. It establishes Kharganj effectively and shows how deeply Baapji is embedded in the local community.

The series also makes it clear that challenging a powerful religious figure will not be straightforward.

That early tension creates genuine curiosity about how the investigation will unfold.

The problem is that the momentum does not last.

Does Hunkkaar have a fresh story?

The basic premise of Hunkkaar is familiar. Stories involving powerful godmen, allegations of sexual abuse and institutions struggling to confront influential figures have already appeared across Indian cinema and streaming.

That makes the execution particularly important.

Hunkkaar has enough material for a gripping courtroom and investigative thriller. However, the screenplay does not consistently find fresh ways to explore its subject.

Several developments feel less convincing as the story progresses. Some scenes generate tension, while others raise questions about why certain narrative choices were made.

The result is a series that begins with a clear sense of purpose but becomes increasingly uneven.

Aneet Padda and Fatima Sana Shaikh deliver strong performances

Aneet Padda is one of the major strengths of Hunkkaar. Her portrayal of Meenu gives the central case an important human dimension.

The character’s position as a young complainant facing an influential figure makes her journey central to the series. Padda brings sincerity to the role even when the writing does not provide enough emotional depth.

Fatima Sana Shaikh is equally effective as ACP Jasleen Soni.

Soni is introduced as an officer dealing with a case that has already attracted considerable attention. Her conversation with local lawyer Bhalerao suggests that the administration may not expect her investigation to succeed.

That could have become one of the show’s most interesting conflicts.

Unfortunately, the series does not explore the institutional pressure on Soni as deeply as it should.

Raghubir Yadav brings menace to Baapji

Raghubir Yadav’s Baapji is another interesting element of the series.

The character’s power comes less from conventional displays of authority and more from the devotion surrounding him. Kharganj has effectively turned him into an institution within the town.

Yet Hunkkaar does not sufficiently explore Baapji’s darker side.

The series establishes his influence early, but the writing does not always give the character enough layers to explain how he acquired such control or why people continue to defend him.

That makes the central conflict feel less complex than it could have been.

The supporting characters create too many loose threads

One of Hunkkaar‘s biggest problems is the number of storylines that are introduced without receiving adequate development.

The District Magistrate appears to have an important role but contributes relatively little to the larger narrative.

Anurag Singh, a senior television journalist from Mumbai played by Arjun Mathur, also becomes part of the investigation’s media dimension.

There is potential in showing how television coverage shapes a sensitive case. However, the series does not fully develop this angle.

Similarly, Shivani’s hostility towards Baapji’s son is introduced without enough explanation or payoff.

These threads make the series feel broader without necessarily making it richer.

The legal thriller needed stronger writing

The most frustrating aspect of Hunkkaar is that its premise has the ingredients for a gripping legal thriller.

A minor’s allegation against a powerful spiritual leader creates several natural points of conflict: the police investigation, public opinion, media pressure, legal strategy and the influence of the accused.

The series touches each of these areas.

But instead of developing a few of them deeply, it often moves between multiple threads.

This weakens the emotional impact of Meenu’s fight and reduces the tension surrounding the investigation.

Is Hunkkaar worth watching?

Hunkkaar: The Roar is worth considering primarily for its performances and promising premise, but viewers looking for a tightly written legal thriller may find the execution uneven.

Aneet Padda and Fatima Sana Shaikh provide the strongest performances, while Raghubir Yadav makes Baapji an intriguing presence.

The setting is also effective.

However, the screenplay needed greater focus, and several character arcs deserved more development.
