For many fans, 3 Idiots is more than just a film — it’s a cultural touchstone that continues to resonate even 16 years after its release in 2009. Naturally, speculation about a sequel resurfaces from time to time. However, actors Aamir Khan and R Madhavan have now gently addressed the chatter, suggesting that some stories are special because they remain untouched.
R Madhavan on the Sequel Speculation
Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, R Madhavan responded to the rumours with honesty and humour. While acknowledging the affection audiences still have for the film, he expressed doubts about the feasibility of a sequel.
“A sequel to 3 Idiots sounds great. But it also sounds far-fetched. All three of us — Aamir Khan, Sharman Joshi and I — are much older now. Where do we go in the sequel? What are our lives like now?” he said.
Madhavan added that while he would love to collaborate with director Rajkumar Hirani again, revisiting 3 Idiots may not be the right path.
“I would love to work with Raju Hirani again. But 3 Idiots again? I think that would be idiotic.”

Aamir Khan Shares His Emotional Connection
In the same interview, Aamir Khan reflected on the lasting impact of the film and his iconic character Rancho.
“We had so much fun making that film. Rancho is the most popular character I’ve played. People still talk about him,” Aamir said.
While he admitted that he would personally love the idea of a sequel, the actor clarified that no such project is currently in the works.
“I’d love to do a sequel. But no one has approached me.”
Sharman Joshi on Past Rumours
Earlier, Sharman Joshi also addressed recurring sequel rumours in an interview with Hindustan Times, recalling how previous buzz had turned out to be misleading.
“On more than a couple of occasions, there has been buzz that the 3 Idiots sequel is happening. The last time, it turned out to be for an ad campaign,” he said.
He added that any genuine sequel would have to come from the original creators.
“Only Raju sir, Abhijat Joshi sir and Aamir would be working on it if there is potential.”
Jay-Ho Now
3 Idiots continues to live on through repeat viewings, memes, and conversations — a rare feat for any film. While fans may always wonder what happened to Rancho, Farhan, and Raju, the actors’ responses underline a shared sentiment: some classics are timeless because they are left as they are.
Jay-Ho! will update this story if there is any official word from Rajkumar Hirani or the makers.
