Akhil Sachdeva on Composing for Suswagatam Khushamadeed: “Less is More in Music”

Akhil Sachdeva, the talented composer behind the hit song Sun Mere Hamsafar, is back with two new tracks in the upcoming movie Suswagatam Khushamadeed. The film marks the debut of Isabelle Kaif, Katrina Kaif’s sister, alongside Pulkit Samrat. As a composer, Akhil has always focused on creating songs that are simple yet memorable, and his work for this film continues that tradition.

A Call for Simplicity and Melody

When Akhil Sachdeva was approached to create music for Suswagatam Khushamadeed, the filmmakers wanted him to capture the same charm that his debut song, Sun Mere Hamsafar, had. Pulkit Samrat, who plays the lead role in the film, asked for a song that was just as simple and melodious. Akhil was happy to oblige and created a song that captured the essence of the original track. “Pulkit wanted something as simple and melodious as Sun Mere Hamsafar,” says Akhil.

Besides this track, Akhil has also composed another song for the film, which he describes as “situation-based.” This song is tied to a pivotal moment in the film’s narrative, and Akhil crafted it to fit the emotions of that specific scene.

The Creative Process: Simple Melodies that Connect

Reflecting on his creative journey, Akhil reveals that his approach has always been about creating music that resonates with listeners. “My mantra is to create simple melodies that are easy to hum,” he shares. As a songwriter, Akhil also focuses on writing lyrics that are straightforward and relatable. “I try to ensure that the words are simple and that the audience can connect with them,” he explains.

However, Akhil acknowledges that the music industry is constantly evolving, and he has been adjusting his style to fit these changes. “In the past, music was often fuller, with many instruments playing at once. But today, we are seeing a shift. Less is more,” he says. The simplicity of modern music, with fewer layers of instrumentation, is what audiences seem to appreciate more these days. Despite these changes, Akhil’s goal remains the same: to create music that feels fresh while still evoking the same emotions as his earlier works.

Serving the Story First

Even as he embraces new trends in music, Akhil emphasizes the importance of staying true to the film’s narrative. He believes that the composer’s primary job is to serve the story, rather than focus solely on commercial trends. In Suswagatam Khushamadeed, this philosophy is evident in the two contrasting songs he created for the film.

“One song needed to sound Indian, so I used a lot of percussion and drums. The other song is completely different,” Akhil explains. This balance between the music and the narrative is key to his approach.

A Special Bond with Pulkit Samrat

Akhil’s connection with Suswagatam Khushamadeed star Pulkit Samrat goes beyond their professional collaboration. Akhil shares a close friendship with Pulkit, and the two have worked together on many occasions. One of their most special projects was the song Turr Chaliyan, which Akhil composed for Pulkit’s wedding to actress Kriti Kharbanda. Akhil had been involved in the music-making process for months leading up to the wedding and considered the song his personal gift to the couple.

Akhil Sachdeva: Fresh Music for a Changing Industry

Akhil Sachdeva’s work on Suswagatam Khushamadeed reflects his ongoing efforts to adapt to the changing landscape of the music industry. While he stays true to his roots of creating simple, emotive melodies, he is also open to experimenting with new styles that fit the evolving tastes of listeners. Through his music, Akhil continues to prove that simplicity and emotion are timeless, no matter how much the music world changes.
