Cutting Short My Goa Vacation: Javed Ali’s Reveals The Story Behind Recording “Tum Tak”

Javed Ali, a prominent figure in the Indian music industry, has mesmerized audiences with his soulful renditions time and again. Among his notable works, the recording of the song “Tum Tak” from the film Raanjhanaa (2013) holds a special place in his heart. Little did he know that this recording would become one of his best songs, as he was caught off guard when composer AR Rahman summoned him for the task.

Recently, in an interview, Javed Ali shared the story behind the making of “Tum Tak”. He says, “I was enjoying family vacation in Goa when I got a call from Rahman Sir. He wanted to record Tum Tak urgently. So I flew to Chennai while my family stayed back in Goa.”

Without hesitation, Ali swiftly made the decision to fly to Chennai, leaving his family behind in Goa. 

Upon arriving in Chennai, Javed Ali found himself in the company of esteemed lyricist Irshad Kamil and the film’s director, Aanand L Rai. Rahman had already composed a captivating tune, and Kamil masterfully crafted lyrics that seamlessly fit the melody. With everyone’s creative energies aligned, the recording session commenced, resulting in the birth of “Tum Tak.”

During the recording process, Javed Ali, Rahman, and the entire team discovered new dimensions to the song. They experimented with various vocal variations and musical nuances, elevating the composition to another level. Grateful for the opportunity, he considers it a blessing to have been a part of this magical project.

Capturing the essence of the film’s quirky romance between Sonam Kapoor and Dhanush, “Tum Tak” became one of the most cherished composition of all time. Javed Ali’s collaboration with fellow singers Keerthi Sagathia and Pooja AV added further depth and richness to the track. Under the guidance of the Grammy-winning maestro AR Rahman and the lyrics penned by Irshad Kamil, “Tum Tak” became an emotional journey that touched the hearts of listeners far and wide.
