God of War Prime Video series has officially found its Kratos. Actor Ryan Hurst has been confirmed to star as the legendary god in the upcoming live-action adaptation of the globally popular PlayStation video game franchise. The announcement marks a major milestone for the series, which has already been greenlit for two seasons.
Ryan Hurst Confirmed as Kratos
Prime Video has officially cast Ryan Hurst as Kratos, the powerful and emotionally complex god at the centre of the God of War universe. Hurst is already familiar with the franchise, having previously voiced Thor in God of War: Ragnarok, a role that earned him a BAFTA nomination.
His casting has been met with excitement from fans, given his deep connection to the game’s mythology and tone.
God of War Series Gets Two-Season Order
According to Amazon’s official press release, the God of War Prime Video series has received a two-season order, with pre-production currently underway in Vancouver, Canada. Casting has begun, and the project is moving steadily toward production.

Story Inspired by the Latest Games
The live-action adaptation will follow the narrative arc of the last two God of War games, focusing on Kratos’ journey after leaving his violent past behind.
The story centres on Kratos and his ten-year-old son, Atreus, as they embark on a deeply personal quest to scatter the ashes of Faye, wife and mother. Along the way, Kratos struggles to balance his identity as a god and warrior with his role as a father.
Kratos and Atreus: A Father–Son Journey
Unlike earlier portrayals that focused heavily on rage and destruction, the series aims to present a more human side of Kratos.
As described in the official synopsis, Kratos tries to teach Atreus how to become a better god, while Atreus teaches his father how to be a better human. This emotional dynamic is expected to be the heart of the series.
Director and Production Details
Prime Video has brought on Frederick E.O. Toye to direct the first two episodes. Toye is known for his work on major series such as Shōgun, The Boys, and Fallout, raising expectations for cinematic quality and scale.
Ryan Hurst’s Upcoming Projects
Before stepping into Kratos’ armour, Ryan Hurst will appear in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, sharing screen space with Matt Damon and Tom Holland.
