In a vibrant and culturally enriching evening, the Foundation of Indian-Americans (FIA) – New England, in collaboration with the Indian-American community, hosted its annual Diwali celebration at the historic Rhode Island State House on Friday, October 17, 2025. The grand event, graced by Governor Daniel McKee as the Chief Guest, symbolized the essence of Diwali — the victory of light over darkness and unity over division. The evening began with the traditional lamp lighting ceremony, setting a spiritual tone for the festivities ahead.
Governor McKee Highlights Service and Compassion Amid Challenges
During his address, Governor McKee extended heartfelt Diwali and holiday season greetings to all attendees and lauded the Indian-American community for its unwavering commitment to service and civic engagement. Emphasizing the power of community-driven initiatives during uncertain times, he spoke about the importance of food donation drives, especially in the face of potential government shutdowns that could impact essential programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
“If benefits are denied and programs like SNAP are impacted, it is community efforts like FIA’s food donation drives that will become lifelines for the needy,” Governor McKee noted. Encouraging everyone to “double down on service and compassion,” he officially inaugurated FIA’s annual Diwali and Holiday Season Food Drive, which aims to distribute over 20,000 pounds of non-perishable food items across Rhode Island and New England in the coming weeks.

Honoring Inspiring Indian-Americans
As part of the ceremony, Governor McKee presented honors to two distinguished Indian-Americans for their remarkable contributions.
- Subrata Das was recognized for his exceptional dedication to performance art and theater, enriching the cultural fabric for over two decades.
- Mohan Nannapaneni received accolades for his extraordinary humanitarian work benefiting both local and global communities.
The Governor also presented a special citation to the FIA Executive Team, led by President Abhishek Singh, in recognition of their consistent efforts in promoting volunteerism, culture, and unity. The citation acknowledged FIA’s year-round initiatives, including blood and food donation drives, Adopt-a-Highway cleanups, Indian Consular Camps, Veterans Day and 9/11 memorial events, India Day celebrations, Yoga Day, International Women’s Day, and participation in the Boston Marathon.
FIA President Abhishek Singh Calls for Unity and Reflection
In his welcome remarks, FIA President Abhishek Singh emphasized that Diwali is not just a festival of lights but a reminder of unity, compassion, and reflection.
“As we gather here, let’s not only celebrate the festivities but also embrace the unity that binds us,” Singh said. “It’s a time to reflect, give thanks, and spread the warmth of kindness and love.”
The event was attended by several prominent community leaders and dignitaries, including Ram Nehara, Mahesh Patel, Kaushik Patel, Sandeep Asija, Nilesh Agarwal, Srinivas Gondi, and Ravi Sarin, along with FIA’s Executive Team — Nikhil Wadhwa, Anand Sharma, Hiten Bhavsar, Deepti Kavsari, Archana Soni, Divya Prakash, Hardik Patel, Nikunj Doshi, Mohan Sonti, and Santosh Thawani.
