Mary Lou Retton Speaks Out Following Battle with Rare Form of Pneumonia

Olympian Mary Lou Retton, the American retired gymnast, recently made her first public statement since returning home from a stay in the ICU due to a very rare form of pneumonia. In an Instagram post, she expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming love and support she has received from around the world during her battle. Mary Lou also revealed that she is currently focused on her recovery process and will share more information about her health issues in the future.

A Long Road to Recovery

Mary Lou Retton’s daughter, McKenna Kelley, provided updates on her mother’s condition throughout her hospitalization. On October 10, she shared the news of Mary Lou’s health issues, stating that she was fighting for her life in the ICU due to a rare form of pneumonia. McKenna launched an online fundraiser to cover her mother’s medical bills, highlighting the fact that Mary Lou was uninsured. Fortunately, on October 23, McKenna announced that her mother had returned home and was in recovery mode. However, she emphasized that there is still a long road ahead for Mary Lou’s full recovery.

Overwhelmed by Love and Support

Mary Lou Retton’s achievements as an Olympian have garnered her a devoted fan base, and her battle with pneumonia united her supporters like never before. For the unversed, Mary Lou made history in 1984 after becoming the first American woman to win an individual all-around gold medal in the sport at the Olympics along with two silver medals and two bronze medals. 

In a heartfelt Instagram video, Mary Lou’s eldest daughter, Shayla, expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of love and messages of support. She mentioned that it was heartwarming to witness people rallying around her mother during such a difficult time. The entire family is incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support they have received.
