Bollywood fans have a new reason to be excited — filmmaker Mira Nair is reportedly bringing the life of iconic painter Amrita Sher-Gil to the big screen in her long-awaited biopic, tentatively titled Amri. The project, years in the making, is now gaining momentum, with reports suggesting that veteran actress Tabu may join the film in a special cameo role.
If finalized, this collaboration will mark the third time Tabu teams up with Mira Nair, following their acclaimed partnerships in The Namesake (2006) and A Suitable Boy (2020).
Mira Nair’s Passion Project Moves Forward
Amri has been described as one of Nair’s most personal and ambitious projects to date. Initially conceptualized in 2020 after A Suitable Boy, the film explores the fascinating life and legacy of Amrita Sher-Gil, often hailed as “India’s Frida Kahlo.” The narrative is expected to span her journey from 1915 to 1941, tracing her formative years across India, Hungary, and France — all of which shaped her identity and artistic voice.
According to reports from Mid-Day, Mira Nair spent nearly four years developing the script and securing producers for this period drama. The film will feature a blend of Indian and international settings, aiming to authentically capture Sher-Gil’s cosmopolitan life and creative struggles.

Casting in Progress; Filming to Begin in March 2026
While the lead actor portraying Amrita Sher-Gil remains unconfirmed, Amri is expected to feature an ensemble of over 15 actors from the Indian film industry. Actress Tanya Maniktala — who worked with Nair on A Suitable Boy — recently clarified that she is not playing the titular role, leaving the main casting still under wraps.
The shooting is slated to commence in March 2026, with the final cast announcement expected by December 2025.
Tabu’s Stellar Career Continues to Shine
Tabu’s involvement is expected to add both depth and prestige to the project. Known for her effortless range and magnetic screen presence, the actress continues to balance commercial success with artistic credibility.
In recent years, Tabu has impressed audiences with her performances in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 and Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, marking her ninth collaboration with Ajay Devgn and reaffirming her versatility. Her choices reflect a rare balance between mainstream appeal and powerful, character-driven roles.
Tabu began her acting journey as a teenager in Dev Anand’s Hum Naujawan (1985) and earned her first lead role in the Telugu hit Coolie No. 1 (1991). Her breakthrough came with Gulzar’s Maachis (1996), which earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress, solidifying her as one of India’s most respected performers.
A Celebration of Art, Identity, and Cinema
If the reports are true, Amri promises to be a rich cinematic tribute to one of India’s most influential artists, brought to life by a master storyteller and a powerhouse performer. With Mira Nair’s vision and Tabu’s brilliance, the film could become one of the most significant biographical dramas in recent Indian cinema.
The world will be watching as Amri begins filming in 2026 — blending art, history, and emotion in a story that transcends generations.
