As the countdown begins for the official release of Squid Game Season 3, Netflix has surprised fans by sharing the first six minutes of the new season. The clip, released on Netflix’s official platform Tudum, brings back a familiar face that fans didn’t expect to see again so soon — Player 456, Gi-hun.
Gi-hun Is Alive — And Back in the Game
The shocking opening scene reveals that Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae), the main character from the first season, is not only alive but is “reborn.” He rises from a coffin-like box that’s mysteriously delivered as a gift. This dramatic scene leaves both the audience and the other characters stunned.
Gi-hun, also known as Player 456, had gone through major emotional trauma in the previous season, especially after losing a close friend. His unexpected return shakes the remaining contestants, and Gi-hun himself seems overwhelmed. In the scene, he even pleads with the guards to end his life, showing just how broken he has become.
A Darker Twist in Season 3
While Gi-hun’s emotional return plays out, a separate group is seen searching for a mysterious island linked to strange disappearances. This new storyline hints at even deeper secrets and more complex twists in the final season.
According to the show’s creator and director, Hwang Dong-hyuk, Gi-hun’s return wasn’t by chance. In an interview with Tudum, he explained the Front Man’s decision to bring Gi-hun back into the deadly game.
“For Front Man, sending Gi-hun back to the game — rather than killing him — makes sense,” Hwang said. “He wants Gi-hun to fully feel the cost of his mistakes. He wants to push him to the edge, to the point where he loses his trust in both humanity and himself. That’s when the real transformation begins.”
Actor Lee Jung-jae Shares His Thoughts
Lee Jung-jae, who plays Gi-hun, also shared what this moment means for his character. “When the coffin opens, Gi-hun is reborn,” Lee said. “He has to return to the game, compete again, and face tough choices all over.”
This rebirth theme suggests that Gi-hun may be a different person this season — possibly more determined, broken, or even dangerous. Fans can expect a more intense version of the character as he navigates even higher stakes.
Squid Game’s Final Season with Bigger Challenges
Season 3 marks the final chapter of Squid Game, and it’s clear that the creators are raising the bar. With a mix of emotional drama, high-stakes survival, and psychological twists, this season promises to go out with a bang.
The first season of Squid Game became a worldwide hit, earning massive popularity and winning six Primetime Emmy Awards. Now, fans are eagerly waiting to see how the story will end.
