In the annals of Indian cinema, some filmmakers leave a lasting legacy in a brief span. Awtar Krishna Kaul, who directed the classic 27 Down, is one such figure. Released in 1974, the film earned critical acclaim for its innovative storytelling and striking visuals, winning two National Film Awards and securing its place as a milestone in Indian parallel cinema.
Kaul’s journey, however, was as compelling as his cinema. Born in Fatehkadal, Srinagar, on September 27, 1939, he grew up in a modest household far removed from the glamour of cinema. Despite his humble beginnings, he nurtured a passion for storytelling that would later shape his path in filmmaking.
Early Struggles and Determination
Kaul’s youth was marked by hardship. After a conflict with his father, he was forced to leave home and worked at a tea stall on a railway platform. Later, he took employment at a hotel in Ambala, all while continuing his education through open schooling. His determination to learn and grow would become a hallmark of his life.
Eventually, he secured a Class IV job in the Ministry of External Affairs, which brought him to the United States. This opportunity opened doors to further education and exposure to international cinema, laying the groundwork for his filmmaking career.
Studying Film Abroad and Building Experience
In New York, Kaul enrolled at the City University of New York and earned a bachelor’s degree in film. He supported himself through various jobs, including working as a copyholder and news brief writer for prestigious organizations like the Associated Press and British Information Services. One editor, impressed by Kaul’s intellect, mentored him and helped him navigate the media world.
During this period, he also met and married Anne, and the couple returned to India in 1970. Back home, Kaul gained invaluable experience working with Merchant Ivory Productions as an Assistant Director on Bombay Talkie, setting the stage for his own directorial debut.
27 Down – A Cinematic Masterpiece
In 1974, Kaul wrote, directed, and produced 27 Down, telling the story of an ordinary man torn between duty and desire. The film stood out for its innovative narrative structure, moody black-and-white cinematography, and raw emotional depth. It resonated with audiences and critics alike, earning Best Feature Film in Hindi and another National Award, cementing Kaul’s name in the history of parallel cinema in India.
Even decades later, 27 Down continues to be celebrated for its artistry, reflecting Kaul’s vision, creativity, and sensitivity toward human emotions.
