One of Bollywood’s most loved cult comedies is officially getting a sequel. Veteran actor Paresh Rawal has confirmed that Malamaal Weekly 2 is in the works, putting an end to months of speculation surrounding the follow-up to the 2006 hit.

In an exclusive interaction with Hindustan Times, Rawal confirmed his involvement, stating, “Yes, it is true. I am doing the film.” With this confirmation, anticipation around the sequel has significantly intensified among fans of the original.

A Cult Comedy That Defied Expectations

Directed by Priyadarshan, Malamaal Weekly released in 2006 and surprised the trade with its strong box office performance. Mounted on a modest budget of approximately Rs 6–7 crore, the film went on to collect around Rs 42.76 crore — nearly six times its production cost.

What made the success even more remarkable was the absence of traditional megastars like Sanjay Dutt or Ajay Devgn. Instead, the film relied on its ensemble cast, situational comedy, and Priyadarshan’s sharp comic timing to drive footfalls.

The film was later remade in Malayalam as Aamayum Muyalum, further cementing its popularity.

Ensemble Cast That Made It Work

The original film featured a powerhouse ensemble including:

  • Paresh Rawal
  • Om Puri
  • Riteish Deshmukh
  • Arbaaz Khan
  • Reema Sen
  • Rajpal Yadav
  • Asrani
  • Shakti Kapoor

Arbaaz Khan, also known for his work as a producer, played a key role in enhancing the film’s comic rhythm. However, it was Paresh Rawal’s performance that became the film’s defining highlight, delivering some of the most memorable moments.

Priyadarshan’s direction ensured a tightly woven screenplay filled with absurd humour and situational chaos — a trademark of his filmmaking style.

Box Office Triumph Without A Conventional Superstar

Bollywood history has seen multiple films succeed without relying solely on star power, and Malamaal Weekly remains a textbook example. Its success reinforced the idea that strong writing, effective comic timing, and precise direction can drive commercial performance.

The film’s music, composed by Uttank Vora, also complemented the narrative tone, adding to its mass appeal.

Paresh Rawal On ‘Bhagam Bhag 2’ Update

In a separate interaction with Bollywood Hungama, Paresh Rawal also addressed developments around Bhagam Bhag 2. He confirmed that Manoj Bajpayee has replaced Govinda in the sequel. Speaking about the new pairing of Manoj Bajpayee and Akshay Kumar, Rawal remarked, “It’ll make for a different and unique combination.”

Jay-Ho Catch-Up

With Paresh Rawal officially on board, Malamaal Weekly 2 now carries both nostalgia and expectation. The original film’s success stemmed from its ensemble-driven humour and Priyadarshan’s mastery of situational comedy. If the sequel manages to retain that spirit while updating its narrative for contemporary audiences, it could recreate the magic that made the 2006 film a cult favourite.

For fans of classic Bollywood comedy, this confirmation signals the return of a franchise that once proved content-driven humour can triumph at the box office.
