Singer Sreerama Chandra, known for his melodious voice, recently opened up about his experience working on the song Subhanallah from the hit movie Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD). The film, which starred Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, continues to be a fan favourite more than a decade after its release.
A Song That Almost Didn’t Make It
In a recent interview with Zoom, Sreerama shared some behind-the-scenes memories. He revealed that he wasn’t sure if Subhanallah would actually be used in the film. At that time, Arijit Singh was working closely with music director Pritam, and it was Arijit who first recorded Sreerama’s voice for the song.
Later, the lyrics were changed, and Sreerama had to re-record the track. He wasn’t sure whether it would make the final cut. “A few months later, I saw the promo for Balam Pichkari and realized Vishal Dadlani’s version of Subhanallah was used,” he said.
Slow and Steady Rise to Fame
At first, Subhanallah didn’t get as much attention as other songs in the film. Sreerama admitted that it was the “least and last promoted” song from the movie. While upbeat tracks like Balam Pichkari, Dilliwali Girlfriend, and Badtameez Dil were instant hits, Subhanallah slowly gained popularity over the years.
“Other songs were enjoyed immediately, but Subhanallah found its audience gradually,” Sreerama said. Today, the song is considered one of the most loved melodies from the movie.

The “Hot Couple” Factor
During the chat, Sreerama also talked about why the film’s makers focused more on the dance tracks. He explained, “Back then, dance numbers were in trend. Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone were the hot couple, and the audience loved watching their chemistry in energetic songs like Dilliwali Girlfriend.”
However, he believes that melodies like Subhanallah last longer than party songs. “Melodies stay in people’s hearts for a longer time,” he added.
Journey from Indian Idol to Bollywood
Sreerama Chandra’s musical career started in 2006 when he sang for the Telugu film Notebook, thanks to music director Mickey J Meyer. But his big break came in 2010, when he won Indian Idol Season 5. This win opened many doors for him, especially in Bollywood.
In 2011, he made his debut in Hindi cinema with the film Mere Brother Ki Dulhan. Since then, he has given his voice to several Bollywood hits such as 1920: London, Sanam Teri Kasam, Raees, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, and Chandu Champion.
A Song Close to His Heart
Despite the ups and downs, Subhanallah holds a special place in Sreerama’s heart. “I’m proud of Subhanallah and feel grateful for the love it’s getting now. Every singer dreams of such appreciation,” he said with a smile.
