On a sunny Sunday, the small town of Northborough, Massachusetts, turned into a vibrant mosaic of American pride and Indian cultural richness as the Foundation of Indian-Americans (FIA) New England, in association with The Boston Group, hosted a heartfelt celebration for the 249th Independence Day of the United States.
Far more than an event marked by flags and fireworks, the gathering became a meaningful reflection on freedom, sacrifice, and the ties that bind diverse communities together under one star-spangled banner.
A Warm Welcome Sets the Tone
As guests began arriving, there was a buzz of excitement in the air. Families, seniors, community leaders, and volunteers gathered under colorful tents, exchanging warm smiles and greetings. Children ran about waving miniature American flags, while parents and grandparents caught up with friends and neighbors, all soaking in the festive spirit.
The ceremony officially opened with a gracious welcome from Jyoti Singh, a Board of Director at FIA, who thanked everyone for coming together to honor the day. Her words were filled with both gratitude and pride for being part of a community that cherishes freedom and cultural unity.
Guided by Courage and Grace
Guiding the day’s proceedings was emcee Maggie Lemay—a woman whose life story is itself a tribute to American resilience. A U.S. military veteran, survivor of the 9/11 terrorist attack, and Ms. Continental Worldwide, Maggie brought an air of poise and determination to the stage. Her warm voice, mixed with moments of emotion, kept the audience engaged and touched.
She spoke about how days like this remind us of the values that hold America together, and how diverse communities like the Indian-Americans enrich the nation’s fabric.
Voices Rise in Patriotic Harmony
Sanjay Gokhale, Vice President of FIA, stepped forward to lead the gathering in the Pledge of Allegiance. As voices echoed in unison, a sense of unity filled the grounds—a reminder that while we all may come from different corners of the world, we stand together as Americans.
One of the most touching moments followed: young students from Padamini Dance Academy, accompanied by a local band, performed a soulful rendition of the U.S. National Anthem. Little hands rested over little hearts, and their clear voices rang out across the venue, drawing applause and even a few misty eyes from the crowd.

Honoring America’s True Heroes
But the day was not just about celebrations; it was about gratitude.
A central highlight of the event was the honoring of American veterans and local law enforcement—individuals whose service and sacrifice protect the freedoms everyone was there to celebrate.
The heroes recognized included:
- Elizabeth Barry – U.S. Army Veteran, who shared moving stories from her years of service, including moments of courage and the bonds formed with fellow soldiers.
- Bruce DeGraff – U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, who recounted powerful memories of discipline, camaraderie, and the unwavering spirit of the Marines.
- The Northborough Police Department, represented by Chief Brian Griffin and Officer Spencer, who were praised for their ongoing dedication to keeping the community safe.
Local community leaders Meetu Gupta and Irvin Victoria King were also honored for their significant contributions to civic life and community welfare.
Veterans shared personal anecdotes—some poignant, some humorous—about their time in service, including reflections from the era of World War II. Their words drew deep respect from all present, reminding everyone of the price paid for the freedom that Americans enjoy today.
Ms. Shruthi Purushottam, Deputy Consul General of India in Boston, alongside FIA President Abhishek Singh, presented special tokens of appreciation to the honored guests. Their gesture symbolized not just respect, but also the bridge of friendship between India and the United States.
A Message from Across the Miles
Just as the audience thought the day couldn’t get more special, a video message lit up the screen.
Former U.S. Congressman Joe Kennedy III greeted the crowd with warm wishes for Independence Day and took a moment to praise the Indian-American community for their contributions to America’s growth and diversity. His message was received with cheers and applause, adding a sense of national connection to the local celebration.
In his heartfelt address, Subu Kota, founder of The Boston Group, expressed:
“The Indian-American community is an integral part of the fabric of U.S. society and has always stood for the welfare and progress of this nation.”
His words echoed the sentiment that communities like FIA bring strength and richness to America’s social and cultural landscape.
Dance, Music, and Culinary Delights
What’s a celebration without music, dance, and delicious food?
The stage became a burst of color as talented dancers from Padamini Dance Academy performed traditional and modern Indian dances, showcasing flowing costumes and energetic movements that had the audience clapping along.
Music filled the air thanks to the efforts of Santosh & Bhawana, who performed melodious songs, and Maharshi & Jassi, alongside the American band led by Mark Femino, blending Eastern rhythms with Western rock and pop tunes. The result was a unique cultural fusion that captured the essence of the day: unity in diversity.
Meanwhile, the aroma of Indian delicacies floated through the venue. Hardyal Singh Ji ensured everyone was treated to flavorful dishes that brought comfort and joy. The sight of people sampling plates of spicy snacks and sweet treats added to the lively atmosphere.
Capturing Every Moment
Behind the scenes, dedicated individuals worked tirelessly to ensure no memory was lost.
Pramod Kumar Ji moved through the crowd with his camera, capturing heartfelt smiles, emotional moments on stage, and the simple joys of people coming together. Thanks to his efforts, the day’s magic will live on in beautiful photographs.

More Than Just an Event
As the afternoon sun dipped lower and families began to head home, one thing was clear: this was more than an Independence Day party. It was a heartfelt tribute to America’s journey over 249 years—a journey of freedom, opportunity, and the promise that people from every corner of the world can come together to build something beautiful.
Through music, dance, words of gratitude, and the simple joy of community, FIA New England painted a vivid picture of what it means to be American—and Indian-American—today.
