Veteran filmmaker Muzaffar Ali, best known for his classic 1981 film Umrao Jaan, recently spoke about Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Netflix series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. Many people have been drawing comparisons between the two works, as both revolve around the lives of courtesans. However, Ali feels the comparison doesn’t hold much weight.
Speaking in an interview with Times Now, Ali said that while Heeramandi is a beautifully made show, it’s a bit too extravagant for his taste. He said he watched just one episode and found it to be “nice” but also “over-the-top.”
Ali Says Both Works Are Very Different
Muzaffar Ali believes that Umrao Jaan and Heeramandi are very different in style and vision. He explained that his own film comes from a place of deep passion and personal interest, especially in textiles and traditional art forms.
“I’ve seen one episode of Heeramandi. It’s a very different kind of project—grand and lavish. Mine is more rooted and personal. You can’t really compare the two,” he shared.
He went on to say that Bhansali’s show is impressive in its own way, but not something he would personally create. “Heeramandi is too palatial and rich for my liking. I would speak in a different artistic language,” he added.
Rekha’s Performance in Umrao Jaan Still Celebrated
Ali’s Umrao Jaan, starring the legendary Rekha, is being re-released in theaters on June 27. The film follows the emotional journey of a tawaif (courtesan) and poet in 19th-century Lucknow. Rekha’s role in the movie is considered one of the finest performances in Indian cinema. She won the National Film Award for Best Actress for her work in the film.
The movie also features timeless ghazals composed by Khayyam and written by Shahryar. Songs like Dil Cheez Kya Hai, In Aankhon Ki Masti, and Justuju Jiski Thi are still loved by fans of all ages.
Richa Chadha Took Inspiration from Rekha
When Heeramandi was released, actress Richa Chadha, who plays a courtesan in the series, shared that she drew inspiration from Rekha’s iconic performance. She especially looked to the song Ye Kya Jagah Hai Doston for her solo mujra dance in the series.
“Getting love from someone like Rekha ji is something I’ll always remember. She’s always been my hero, my inspiration,” Richa said in an earlier interview.
Umrao Jaan’s Special Screening Brings Stars Together
To celebrate the re-release of Umrao Jaan, a special screening was held where many Bollywood celebrities showed up to honor the film. Stars like Tabu, Hema Malini, and Alia Bhatt were among those who attended.
As Umrao Jaan returns to the big screen, it continues to remind audiences of a simpler, more poetic form of storytelling—something Muzaffar Ali clearly holds close to his heart.
