Janhvi Kapoor turned heads recently at the special screening of the re-release of Umrao Jaan, paying tribute to the timeless elegance of Rekha’s iconic character. Dressed in a custom ivory anarkali by House of Kotwara, Janhvi perfectly captured the essence of grace, poetry, and old-world charm.
Janhvi Kapoor’s Outfit Inspired by an Iconic Character
The ivory anarkali was designed by House of Kotwara, a label started by filmmaker Muzaffar Ali in 1999—who also directed the 1981 classic Umrao Jaan. The outfit was a heartfelt nod to Rekha’s unforgettable role as the elegant and soulful courtesan, Umrao.
Designed with a sweetheart neckline and a fitted bodice that gave a corset-like feel, the outfit blended sensuality with elegance. It featured multiple flowing panels, known as kalis, each crafted with detailed embroidery techniques. The designers used chikankari, kaamdani, and zardozi—traditional Indian embroidery styles known for their richness and beauty. Pearls were also delicately added, reflecting Umrao’s character, who is often remembered with her signature pearl accessories.
“The idea was to represent the same mix of grace, vulnerability, and sensuality that defined Rekha’s performance,” shared Sama Ali from House of Kotwara.
The Story Behind the Dupatta

To complete the look, Janhvi Kapoor wore a pale gold dupatta that has its own bit of fashion history. The dupatta was first seen at Lakmé Fashion Week in 2018 as part of the grand finale look, worn by Sushmita Sen. The fabric was adorned with intricate kaamdani work, a zardozi border, and delicate fareesha aari embroidery—adding a vintage flair to Janhvi’s outfit.
“This dupatta is like a walk down memory lane for those who love old-world fashion,” said Sama Ali.
Jewellery That Told a Story
To complement her graceful look, Janhvi chose jewellery that matched the mood of the evening. She wore traditional gold and crimson meenakari jhumkas paired with kaan phool—ear cuffs that enhanced the regal vibe. The pieces were made by Jagdish Jewellers from Chandigarh and featured antique polki diamonds and rare Basra pearls.
“These earrings are a tribute to the beauty and romance of the Mughal zenana, and of course, to Rekha ji’s legacy,” shared Susham Singla, director of the jewellery house.
Soft Makeup and Romantic Vibes
Keeping with the elegance of her outfit, Janhvi styled her hair in soft waves and chose a natural makeup look. Her rosy tones and gentle glam added a touch of romance, keeping the focus on her dreamy ensemble.
With this beautiful appearance, Janhvi Kapoor didn’t just dress up for a film screening—she honored a cinematic legacy. Her look blended tradition and modern style, capturing the spirit of Umrao Jaan in the most graceful way possible.
