After Dhurandhar, Is Aditya Dhar Directing a Lachit Borphukan Biopic? Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Reveals Plans

Fresh off the blockbuster success of Dhurandhar: The Revenge, filmmaker Aditya Dhar could soon be taking on one of the most ambitious historical projects in Indian cinema. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has revealed that discussions are underway with the acclaimed director to helm a biopic on legendary Ahom military commander Lachit Borphukan.

The announcement comes at a time when Dhar is riding high on the phenomenal success of Dhurandhar, which emerged as one of 2026’s biggest box-office hits and earned widespread acclaim for its gripping storytelling, powerful performances, and large-scale action.

Assam CM Reveals Talks With Aditya Dhar

During a Facebook Live session on Thursday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that he had personally approached Aditya Dhar regarding the proposed film.

Praising the filmmaker’s work, Sarma described Dhar as one of the finest directors of his generation.

“The movie Dhurandhar was a big hit. Aditya Dhar was the director and he is among the best-known names among his contemporaries,” Sarma said, according to PTI.

The Chief Minister explained that his vision is to create a grand Hindi-language film that introduces Lachit Borphukan’s extraordinary story to audiences across India and around the world.

“I think if our government can produce a film on Lachit Borphukan, we can make his heroics known globally. It will be a special achievement for us.”

Director Expected to Visit Assam

Sarma also shared that his initial discussions with Dhar have been encouraging and revealed that the filmmaker is expected to visit Assam in August for further talks regarding the project.

However, he clarified that while Dhar remains the government’s preferred choice, the biopic will move forward regardless of who ultimately directs it.

“If Aditya Dhar is unable to direct the film, we will approach other directors. The objective is to ensure that a grand biopic on Lachit Borphukan is made.”

A Film Backed by the Assam Government

The proposed biopic forms part of the Assam government’s broader initiative to showcase the state’s rich history and legendary personalities through cinema.

In its 2026-27 Budget, presented on July 10, the government announced plans to support films based on the lives of Lachit Borphukan and freedom fighter Kushal Konwar, highlighting their contributions to Indian history.

Who Was Lachit Borphukan?

Lachit Borphukan is widely regarded as one of Assam’s greatest historical heroes.

The celebrated Ahom commander is remembered for leading the Ahom army to a decisive victory over the Mughal Empire in the historic Battle of Saraighat in 1671, successfully preventing Mughal expansion into Assam.

Despite battling serious illness during the campaign, Borphukan’s leadership, courage, and military strategy earned him a permanent place in Indian history. His legacy continues to be celebrated every year through Lachit Divas, observed across Assam.

What’s Next for Aditya Dhar?

While Aditya Dhar has not officially announced his next directorial venture following Dhurandhar, the Assam government’s proposal has generated significant interest among cinema lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
