Biography

Mame Khan was born in Satto, a small village near Jaisalmer in Rajasthan, into the Manganiyar community — a hereditary community of musicians whose folk traditions have been passed down for generations. His father, Ustad Rana Khan, was himself a respected Rajasthani folk singer, and Mame Khan was immersed in Manganiyar folk music from early childhood. At the age of 14, his talent was recognized with a six-year scholarship from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations to pursue formal studies in music and the arts.

Mame Khan made his Bollywood playback debut in 2009 alongside Shankar Mahadevan for the film Luck By Chance. But it was his 2012 appearance on Coke Studio @ MTV (Season 2), performing the folk song “Chaudhary” in collaboration with music director Amit Trivedi, that catapulted him into the spotlight and introduced Manganiyar folk music to a new generation of listeners. He also performed “Badari Badariyan” on the same season alongside singer Mili Nair.

He went on to sing for major Bollywood films including I Am (2010), No One Killed Jessica (2011), Mirzya (2016) — where he performed “Chakora,” “Aave Re Hitchki,” and “Doli Re Doli” — and Sonchiriya (2019), for which his solo track “Baaghi Re” became widely celebrated. His discography has continued to grow steadily, with recent playback credits including “Jamoore” from Chandu Champion (2024, composed by Pritam) and “Bandobast” from Baby John (2024).

In October 2015, Mame Khan released his debut solo album, “Mame Khan’s Desert Sessions,” through a crowdfunding campaign, followed by “Summer Nights on the Dunes” (2016), “No. 1 Yaari Jam” with Salim–Sulaiman (2017), “Unbounded (Abaad)” with Shankar Mahadevan (2021), and “Desert Rose” (2022) — his most recent full folk-Sufi-fusion album. He was also the lead vocalist for Roysten Abel’s acclaimed show “The Manganiyar Seduction,” which has toured internationally since 2006.

Mame Khan’s achievements extend well beyond music charts. In 2022, he became the first-ever folk artist to walk the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival and to perform at the Indian pavilion there. In 2023, he became the first folk singer to open at NMACC’s Studio Theatre. His accolades include the GiMA Award for Best Traditional Folk Single (2016), the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Best Traditional Folk Singer of Rajasthan (2023), and the Clef Music Award for Best Traditional Folk Artist (2023), among many others.

Beyond film and concert stages, Mame Khan has lent his voice to major brand campaigns for Samsung and Tanishq, sung the national anthem for Star Sports’ 2015 Pro Kabaddi League season, and served as the singing voice for the Rajasthan government’s “Mhari Champion” nutrition campaign. He has also performed at prestigious personal celebrations, including a memorable performance at the wedding of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant, an experience he later shared publicly. Most recently, Mame Khan partnered with contemporary performer AJRaps on “Khwaja Ji Khwaja,” a track blending traditional Rajasthani folk with modern rap and fusion sounds — a release that Jay-Ho! highlighted for bridging heritage and contemporary musical expression.
