The Malayalam fantasy film Barroz: Guardian of Treasures has finally made its way to OTT. Released in theaters exclusively in 3D on December 25 last year, the movie marks the directorial debut of legendary actor Mohanlal. Despite high expectations, the film received a lukewarm response during its theatrical run. However, fans now have the opportunity to enjoy the film from the comfort of their homes.

OTT Release Details

Barroz quietly premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on January 22, less than a month after its big-screen debut. Interestingly, Mohanlal did not promote the digital release on his social media platforms, but Disney+ Hotstar announced it with excitement. The film is available in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada, with fans eagerly awaiting a Hindi-dubbed version. The platform shared the news with a post saying, “Step into the magical world of Barroz: The Guardian of Treasures, streaming from January 22nd on Disney+ Hotstar.”

About the Film

Barroz is a high-budget fantasy drama produced by Antony Perumbavoor under Aashirvad Cinemas. The film features an international cast, including Maya Rao West, Cesar Lorente Raton, Ignacio Mateos, Kallirroi Tziafeta, Nerea Camacho, and Tuhin Menon. The story is based on Jijo Punnoose’s novel Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure. Initially announced in 2019, the film faced several delays, partly due to the pandemic. During this time, Mohanlal and TK Rajeev Kumar revised the story and script, leading to Jijo Punnoose stepping away from the project.

The movie is set in a magical world and follows the story of Barroz, the guardian of Vasco da Gama’s treasure, who is waiting for the rightful heir to claim it. Despite its intriguing premise and 3D visuals, the film managed to collect ₹9.83 crore in India and ₹15.1 crore globally, according to reports from Sacnilk.

Mohanlal on Taking the Director’s Chair

Expectations were sky-high for Barroz, given that it was Mohanlal’s debut as a director and was shot in 3D. However, the superstar shared that directing was not his original plan. In an interview with ANI, he said, “It just happened. I was not very keen on it. This is a children-friendly movie, one you can watch with your family. When I first heard the story, I felt compelled.”

Mohanlal also addressed Jijo Punnoose’s departure, explaining, “Jijo had the story, but he wasn’t ready to direct it himself. He wanted to direct a bigger film. That’s when I stepped in.”

Where to Watch

For those who missed Barroz in theaters or want to relive the magic, the film is now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar. It’s a family-friendly adventure with stunning visuals, perfect for a cozy movie night.
