After more than four years of investigation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has closed the case related to actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. The CBI has said that it found no evidence that anyone pushed Sushant to take his own life. His former girlfriend, Rhea Chakraborty, and her family have been given a clean chit.
What Happened in 2020?
Sushant Singh Rajput, a 34-year-old Bollywood actor, was found dead at his apartment in Bandra, Mumbai, on June 14, 2020. The news shocked the country, with fans and the media raising many questions. Several rumors spread, including some wild claims involving black magic. The pressure led to multiple investigations by different agencies.
Why Did CBI Get Involved?
Initially, Sushant’s father, KK Singh, filed a complaint in Patna. He accused Rhea Chakraborty of mentally harassing his son, giving him medicines, and using his money. Bihar Police started a case, but it was later handed over to the CBI in August 2020 to ensure a fair investigation.
Rhea, in turn, also made allegations against Sushant’s family. The CBI looked into both sets of complaints.
What Did the Investigation Find?
During the investigation, the CBI examined all the digital evidence. They checked Sushant’s laptop, hard drives, two mobile phones, and a camera. A forensic team from AIIMS also studied the case and confirmed that Sushant’s death was a suicide, not murder.
Over 20 people, including Rhea Chakraborty, were questioned. But in the end, the CBI found no proof that anyone caused or encouraged Sushant’s death. All those named in the case, including Rhea and her family, were cleared of all charges.
What Happens Next?
The CBI has submitted its closure report to the Bandra magistrate court. The next hearing is set for April 8. Once the court accepts the report, the case will officially be closed.
Rhea Chakraborty’s Lawyer Speaks Out

Rhea’s lawyer, Satish Maneshinde, said that he and Rhea were thankful for the detailed investigation. He criticized the media and the public for spreading false stories during the pandemic, saying Rhea was wrongly treated and even jailed for 27 days without evidence.
He praised Rhea and her family for staying silent through the storm and said he was proud to support them without charging any fee. “This country is still safe, and justice is possible through our strong legal system,” he added.
Supreme Court’s View
In 2023, the Supreme Court criticized the CBI and other authorities for trying to stop Rhea and her family from traveling abroad by issuing lookout notices. The Court said it seemed like they were being targeted just because they were high-profile individuals.
The court called the actions “frivolous” and warned against such misuse of power.
