This time, she received the Best Supporting Actress National Award for her role as Shabina Siddiqui in the 2022 movie Uunchai. The announcement was made at the 70th National Awards ceremony on August 16, marking a special moment in Gupta’s career as she claims her third National Award after a long span of 30 years.

When asked if she still yearns for prestigious awards, Neena Gupta candidly shared her thoughts. “Everyone desires recognition and awards,” she said. “When you don’t receive one, it’s natural to feel disappointed for a while. However, I remind myself to stay focused and keep working hard. I believe that eventually, recognition will come. Being acknowledged for your work feels really good.”
A Career Milestone
This award marks Gupta’s third National Award win. Her journey began with her first National Film Award for Best First Non-Feature Film of a Director in 1993 for Bazar Sitaram. Her second award came in 1994 for Woh Chokri, where she was honored as Best Supporting Actress. Each recognition is a testament to her enduring talent and dedication.
Gupta reflected on what motivates her in her career. “What do you work for?” she questioned, then answered, “You work to be appreciated. I don’t want to perform in isolation; I want my work to be seen and appreciated by many. Receiving an award reminds me to keep striving. Even if I don’t see immediate results, the encouragement helps me continue working hard, knowing that success may come in time.”
Unlike many who might list all their acknowledgments, Gupta prefers to keep this win close to her heart. She explained why she dedicates this award solely to herself. “Every work is uncertain these days. There is a lot of competition and many hurdles, and sometimes it’s easy to feel discouraged. Films may not get released, which can be frustrating. But I’ve learned to tell myself to keep working, believing that someday someone will notice my efforts. It’s a personal journey of perseverance.”
Inspiration from the Past
Recalling her days at the National School of Drama in New Delhi, Gupta shared a valuable lesson she learned as a student. “There was a dialogue in one of our plays that went, ‘Everyone must endure their own toothache.’ This means that while others can support you, you alone must bear your own struggles. This perseverance, where I continued working even when things were tough, is what has driven me. Though I have received support from many, it is my determination that has kept me going.”
