Prateik Babbar, the son of the legendary actress Smita Patil, made a heartfelt tribute to his late mother during his recent appearance at the Cannes Film Festival 2024. Instead of opting for a conventional suit, Prateik wore something special – an outfit crafted from his mother’s cherished Kanjeevaram sarees.

At the screening of the film Manthan during the Cannes Film Festival, Prateik Babbar caught everyone’s attention with his unique attire. The film, a part of the Cannes’ Classics Section, honored the 1976 classic movie and the legacy of Smita Patil.

The Masterpiece Creation

The outfit, designed by Rahul Vijay, was a work of art. It beautifully combined tradition with contemporary style. Rahul, in a heartfelt social media post, expressed his gratitude to Prateik for allowing him to work with his mother’s wardrobe. However, it wasn’t an easy task. The challenge lay in merging the feminine essence of Smita Patil’s sarees with Prateik’s masculine style.

With the help of Prateik’s aunt, they selected two stunning silk Kanjeevaram sarees, which had been carefully preserved over the years. The design journey was a collaborative effort, aiming to blend Indian textiles with modern silhouettes. Together with Monica Shah of Jade by MK, they crafted a unique ensemble. A cropped double-breasted tuxedo in plain black silk was complemented by wide-legged pants adorned with the pinstripe pattern from one of the sarees. The red border from the second saree added elegance to the ensemble, wrapping the sleeves in a beautiful accent.

The founder of the Film Heritage Foundation, Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, was also present, celebrating the restored print of the iconic film.

Prateik Babbar’s Personal Touch

Prateik added a personal touch to his attire by wearing his mother’s black and white scarf. With a pair of black wayfarers and neatly tied hair in a man bun, Prateik’s look exuded both style and sentiment.
