Actor Rhea Chakraborty recently opened up about the intense scrutiny and backlash she faced following the tragic death of her former partner, Sushant Singh Rajput, in June 2020. In a candid discussion on the podcast “Humans of Bombay,” Rhea shared her experiences and the impact they had on her life.
A Sudden Shift
Before Sushant’s death, Rhea Chakraborty described herself as someone who was “delusionally optimistic.” She enjoyed her acting career, focused on being financially independent, and didn’t set specific goals for her professional life. Rhea admitted that she never anticipated being the center of such intense public attention or criticism. “I never imagined that the entire country would form an opinion about me, whether it was positive or negative. As an actor, my goal was never to be the best; I simply loved acting,” she explained.
Facing the Unthinkable
After Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, Rhea faced severe allegations. She was accused of playing a role in his suicide and was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) regarding money laundering claims. The situation escalated when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) got involved. The NCB arrested Rhea and her brother, Showik, alleging they supplied marijuana to Sushant. Despite these claims, the Bombay High Court later dismissed the theory that Rhea was involved in financing or harboring Sushant’s alleged addiction.
The Weight of Public Criticism
The backlash was harsh. Rhea was subjected to derogatory names and accusations, such as being called a “chudail” (witch), involved in “kaala jaadu” (black magic), and a “naagin” (mythical serpent). “Initially, these insults did affect me, but over time, I learned not to let them bother me too much,” Rhea said.
Rhea Chakraborty’s Journey to Forgiveness
Dealing with such overwhelming anger and public hostility took a toll on Rhea’s health. She struggled with severe acidity and digestive issues for nearly three years. “I was incredibly angry for a long time, and it only led to more physical problems,” Rhea shared. She realized that holding onto anger was detrimental to her well-being. Eventually, she found that forgiveness was the only way to move forward and regain control of her life. “Forgiveness became the simpler path for me, despite how challenging it seemed at first. It was necessary for my peace of mind.”
