DC Studios has released the first trailer for Supergirl, giving fans an early look at Milly Alcock’s take on Kara Zor-El. The trailer dropped online Thursday following a private Manhattan preview hosted by DC co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, director Craig Gillespie, and Alcock herself. Both the trailer and the star-studded event hinted at how Alcock’s Supergirl will differentiate herself from her more optimistic cousin, Superman.

A Darker, Punk-Inspired Supergirl

Set to Blondie’s Call Me, the trailer picks up after Supergirl’s cameo in Gunn’s Superman, where she sneaks into the Fortress of Solitude to retrieve her super-powered dog, Krypto. The footage opens with a bleary-eyed Kara blowing out a birthday candle alone in a dark room, foreshadowing her internal struggles. While the source of her turmoil remains unclear, director Gillespie emphasized at the preview that her personal demons and baggage will define the narrative.

“This is really an anti-hero story,” Gillespie said. “She’s got a lot of baggage and a lot of demons coming into this, which is very different from where Superman is in his life.”

Intergalactic Adventure and Iconic Casting

The trailer takes viewers across grungy, interstellar colonies filled with alien populations, evoking the chaotic, lived-in feel of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy films. Fans also get a brief first look at Jason Momoa as Lobo—a cigar-chomping, motorcycle-riding anti-hero who Gunn has envisioned since taking over DC Studios. Momoa’s Lobo is expected to play a major role, adding another layer of chaos and fun to the story.

Alcock Handpicked for the Role

Gunn revealed that Alcock, fresh from House of the Dragon, was on his radar even before his deal to lead DC Studios was finalized. “You know who’d be great as Supergirl?” he recalled telling Safran. “That little girl from House of the Dragon. I think she’s really got something special about her.”

Alcock expressed excitement after viewing the completed trailer: “It’s so weird, in the best way. It’s really surreal seeing everyone’s work come together. It’s going to happen. Shit.”

A Fresh Take on Female Superheroes

Gunn also explained that the film aims to offer a fresh, “punk” take on the superhero genre. “So many times female superheroes are so perfect,” he said. “She’s not that at all. She’s very imperfect, like male superheroes have been allowed to be for a while.” He emphasized that Supergirl is not a clone of Superman but a standalone story deserving of its own cinematic treatment.

Creative Team and Source Material

Craig Gillespie (Cruella, I, Tonya) directs Supergirl, with a script by Ana Nogueira, who is also penning the upcoming Wonder Woman reboot. The movie is based on Tom King’s acclaimed comic series, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, promising fans a narrative that is both epic and character-driven.

Jay-Ho Update

With Milly Alcock stepping into the iconic role, Supergirl promises a darker, more nuanced, and refreshingly imperfect take on a beloved DC hero. Coupled with Jason Momoa’s Lobo and a visually chaotic intergalactic setting, the trailer sets high expectations for what could be one of DC Studios’ most unique cinematic entries yet.
