Since its release on May 1, Netflix’s series “Heeramandi” has been under the spotlight, but not all of it has been positive. Sharmin Segal, one of the lead actresses, has faced significant criticism for what some viewers describe as “expressionless” acting. The backlash was so intense that Sharmin disabled the comments section on her Instagram posts.

Taha Shah’s Support

Amid the criticism, Taha Shah, Sharmin’s co-star in “Heeramandi,” has come to her defense. In a recent interview with Zoom, Taha explained that Sharmin’s acting style is more subtle and nuanced, which may not be immediately appreciated by all viewers. He emphasized that it is unfair to compare her to more seasoned actresses like Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, and Aditi Rao Hydari.

Taha Saha’s Perspective

Taha shared his thoughts on Sharmin’s performance, saying, “She follows the method of keeping it very subtle at times. I have worked with her, and I know as an actor she has tried her best. I felt that people would not give me any love… but not the way I am. So, the audience can react in a very unpredictable way, to be very honest.”

He further added, “You can’t compare someone new, much newer than me, to Manisha ma’am or Sonakshi Sinha or even Aditi Rao Hydari. Manisha Ma’am has been there for ages. She has worked with the best directors and actors. So, people learn over time. I’m sure if the audience found fault in her, she would do better. I know she wants to learn.”

Taha’s comments shed light on the challenges that new actors often face in the industry. He emphasized that Sharmin’s approach to her role is intentional and reflects her acting style, which focuses on subtlety rather than overt expressions. This method, while different, is a legitimate acting technique that can sometimes be misunderstood or underappreciated by the audience.

About Heeramandi

“Heeramandi” is set in the red-light district of Heera Mandi in Lahore, during the pre-partition era of India. The series explores the Indian freedom struggle during the British Raj, providing a rich historical backdrop. Taha plays the character of Tajdar Baloch in the series, which also stars Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Shekhar Suman, and Adhyayan Suman in significant roles. Directed by the acclaimed Sanjay Leela Bhansali, “Heeramandi” brings to life a vibrant and tumultuous period in Indian history.

Taha Shah’s defense of Sharmin Segal highlights the complexities of acting and audience perception. While Sharmin may have faced criticism, it’s important to recognize that every actor brings their unique style and interpretation to a role. Comparisons with more experienced actors can be unfair and unhelpful.
