The Bhootnii had the potential to be a fun horror comedy, but sadly, it doesn’t quite live up to expectations. The movie stars Sanjay Dutt as a ghost hunter, along with Sunny Singh, Mouni Roy, and Palak Tiwari in lead roles. The film tries to mix spooky elements with humor, but the result is uneven.
What’s the Film About?
The story is centered around a funny and fictional version of the “Virgin Tree” pooja, a tradition from Hindu College in Delhi. According to legend, if someone prays at this tree on Valentine’s Day, they’ll find true love.
Sunny Singh plays Shantanu, a heartbroken guy who takes part in the pooja, hoping to find love again. His wish is answered—kind of. He meets Mohabbat, a ghost (played by Mouni Roy), and from there, the story takes a bizarre turn.
A Familiar Formula
Directed by Sidhaant Sachdev, the film feels like a mash-up of many horror comedies we’ve seen before, especially Stree. There’s a spooky female ghost, a gang of confused but funny friends, and plenty of jokes sprinkled throughout. The movie even makes fun of itself with a line referencing Mouni Roy’s hit TV show Naagin, which adds a moment of self-aware humor.

What Works in The Bhootnii
One of the stronger parts of the film is its quirky, fantasy-filled world. The film doesn’t try to be realistic, and that helps in some places. Sanjay Dutt plays Baba, a ghost hunter with a laid-back style and good comic timing. His scenes, especially when he’s with Nickunj Sharma and Aasif Khan, manage to deliver a few real laughs.
Mouni Roy fits comfortably into her role as a ghost, thanks to her past experience in similar characters. Palak Tiwari also leaves a decent impression, and Sunny Singh does a good job overall, though his emotional scenes sometimes feel overdone.
Where It Falls Flat
While the comedy works at times, the film struggles with its pacing. The first half feels slow and uneven, and the jokes don’t always land. The action scenes—especially the dramatic entries and big climax moments—drag on and might have you reaching for your phone.
Also, while the fantasy theme is fun, the film goes overboard in some areas, making the story feel too far-fetched, even for a horror comedy. Some dialogues that were supposed to be funny end up sounding forced or awkward.
The Bhootnii Movie Review
The Bhootnii isn’t completely terrible—it does have a few entertaining moments and a couple of good performances. But it’s not particularly scary or laugh-out-loud funny either. If you’re looking for a light, one-time watch and don’t expect too much, this film might do the trick. Just don’t expect a horror or comedy masterpiece.
