Fundraising galas usually follow a familiar rhythm — speeches, presentations, formal conversations, and applause. But at the recent Akshaya Patra Foundation USA Boston Gala, the energy inside the ballroom changed completely the moment Shirish Nimgaonkar and his band Kashish took the stage.
What began as an elegant evening supporting Akshaya Patra’s mission to fight childhood hunger in India soon transformed into a celebration filled with nostalgia, live music, and spontaneous singing across the room. The gala itself marked a major milestone for the Boston community, helping raise nearly $1 million in support of Akshaya Patra Foundation USA’s humanitarian efforts.
For nearly 20 memorable minutes, guests who had gathered for the cause found themselves singing along, clapping to the rhythm, and eventually dancing near their tables as Bollywood classics filled the ballroom.
A Performance That Started with Musical Depth
The performance began on a soulful and emotionally rich note.
Opening with songs like Aaj Ibaadat and Channa Mereya, Shirish immediately established the depth of his musical foundation. His singing carried the discipline of years of Hindustani classical training — controlled phrasing, emotional texture, and effortless command over difficult transitions.
And that musical journey began very early in life.
Long before becoming a technology entrepreneur, AI innovator, and Entrepreneur in Residence at Harvard Business School, Shirish was deeply immersed in Indian classical music. He started learning music at around the age of four and later earned a Sangeet Visharad in Hindustani classical vocals along with formal tabla certification. His first stage performance reportedly came at the age of six when he performed Raag Durga — an early beginning that still reflects in the confidence and maturity of his singing today.
The Rare Ability to Blend Classical and Commercial Music
What truly makes Shirish stand out is not just classical training.
It is versatility.
Very few performers can move naturally from semi-classical emotion into high-energy retro Bollywood entertainment without losing authenticity. Shirish managed that transition seamlessly.
As the set progressed, the atmosphere inside the ballroom evolved with it.
The audience slowly shifted from quiet appreciation to full participation as timeless songs like Baar Baar Dekho and Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyaar Ke Charche brought a wave of nostalgia across generations. Guests who had arrived for a formal gala suddenly found themselves smiling, singing loudly, and dancing together.
By the time Shirish launched into Khaike Paan Banaraswala, the room had completely opened up. The performance no longer felt like background entertainment for a gala. It had become one of the defining moments of the evening.
The progression of songs itself felt thoughtfully designed — beginning with soulful and technically demanding melodies that showcased vocal range and artistry, before gradually building into energetic retro Bollywood numbers designed to unite the entire room.

The Research Behind Music and Human Connection
Interestingly, modern research around music, nostalgia, and human behavior suggests that performances like this may do far more than simply entertain audiences.
A 2023 cross-cultural study titled “Music-Evoked Nostalgia and Charitable Giving: A Cross-Cultural Study in the United States and Mexico” by researchers Eun Cho, Mario Duarte-García, Jorge Rodrigo Sigal Sefchovich, and Paulo C. Chagas explored the relationship between nostalgic music and charitable behavior.
The study found that music capable of triggering nostalgia and emotional memory can positively influence generosity, emotional connection, and charitable giving behavior among audiences.

Additional research in psychology and neuroscience has also examined what scientists call “Music-Evoked Autobiographical Memory” (MEAM) — the phenomenon where familiar songs trigger vivid emotional memories and social bonding across generations.
Cognitive neuroscientist Petr Janata and several later researchers demonstrated how familiar music can activate emotionally rich autobiographical memories and strengthen emotional engagement among listeners.

In many ways, that emotional connection was clearly visible throughout Kashish’s performance. As Shirish transitioned from soulful semi-classical melodies into beloved retro Bollywood songs, the atmosphere inside the ballroom visibly changed. Guests who had arrived for a formal gala were suddenly singing together, dancing near their tables, and emotionally participating in the evening rather than simply observing it.
Even outside fundraising, researchers and retail psychologists have long studied how music influences human behavior in public environments. Studies in retail psychology have shown that carefully selected music can affect mood, increase engagement time, strengthen emotional comfort, and positively influence customer behavior in shopping environments.
Perhaps that is one of the reasons live musical performances continue to remain such an important part of community fundraising events worldwide. Beyond entertainment, they create emotional connection — and emotional connection is often what transforms a gathering into a memorable shared experience.
Kashish: Music with a Social Purpose
That artistic vision is deeply connected to the philosophy behind Kashish itself.
Founded by Shirish Nimgaonkar, Kashish was created as a fusion band that combines musical excellence with social impact. Over the years, the group has performed across the United States, Europe, and India, blending Indian classical traditions, fusion arrangements, and Bollywood music while supporting numerous nonprofit and community initiatives.
The band has also been recognized at prominent levels, including being among the select bands invited to perform by the Governor of Massachusetts.
The Entrepreneur Behind the Music
Professionally, Shirish’s journey outside music is equally remarkable.
He is the founder and CEO of eBlissAI, an AI-native enterprise autonomy platform, an Entrepreneur in Residence at Harvard Business School, and a graduate of IIT Bombay, Stanford University, and Harvard.
Earlier in his career, he also served as a Managing Director at a global investment bank while continuing to pursue music alongside an intense professional career.
In a recent leadership interview, Shirish described his journey as a series of “audacious pivots” driven by learning, experimentation, and impact — a philosophy that perhaps also explains the confidence and originality he brings to the stage.
Jay-Ho! Supporting the Evening as AV Partner
A major part of the evening’s immersive atmosphere was also supported by Jay-Ho!, which served as the AV Partner for the gala.
Unlike traditional concert venues, hotel ballrooms often present unique acoustic and production challenges for live musical performances. Since the entire sound and lighting setup needs to be brought in externally, AV teams must carefully balance speaker placement, stage coverage, audience experience, and sound reflections within a relatively compressed indoor environment — especially when speaker systems are positioned close to both the stage and the audience area.
In situations like these, achieving a clean and enjoyable live music experience requires not just equipment, but careful tuning, coordination, and musical sensitivity.
Despite the complexity of the ballroom setup and the realities of working within a disciplined nonprofit event budget, the evening’s sound, lighting, and stage presentation came together smoothly. More importantly, the strength of the live performers themselves played a major role in elevating the overall experience.
When you have a powerful vocalist, disciplined musicians, and a band that understands live audience energy, even a technically challenging environment can transform into a memorable musical experience.
The combination of Kashish’s stage presence and the coordinated AV execution helped create an atmosphere where the audience could simply enjoy the music, connect emotionally, and become part of the celebration.
A Memorable Moment for the Boston Indian Community
In many ways, the performance reflected the spirit of the Boston Indian community itself — rooted in culture, professionally accomplished, emotionally connected through music, and eager to support meaningful causes together.
The evening demonstrated how community, philanthropy, and culture can come together powerfully under one roof — with music becoming one of the emotional connectors of the night.
And on this particular evening, Shirish Nimgaonkar and Kashish gave the Akshaya Patra Boston Gala one of its most memorable moments.
